Stuffed tomatoes is the ultimate Greek summer dish. “Yemistá” as we call them is a meal that we enjoy eating this time of the year when tomatoes are rich in flavor, juicier and much tastier. They are usually stuffed with rice and different fresh herbs and baked in the oven, that being the most popular version. There is also a version where the stuffing is a mixture of minced meat sauce and rice -that is more of a Sunday treat. Today we’ve got for you the veggie version, meaning that rice is the basic stuffing ingredient. We hope you enjoy it!

Not without reason Greek pies are becoming more and more popular. They’re not only delicious and rich in taste but they are also easy to make. Sunny winter days in Athens
The first days of the new year have found Athens under a blue, sunny sky, while the weather is gently warm as the wind blows from the south. Not that winter is over yet, but there is a hint of spring in the air. It is always like this in January, the weather being fair and mild, giving the opportunity to Athenians and visitors to take long walks in the city center or to stroll by the beach side. January’s gentle weather helps us “refill our batteries” as we say here in Greece and it’s a good motive to explore and relish the most of our beloved city.
Traditional Greek chickpea soup
As we have mentioned before in our blog, Greeks have a strong love for legumes. We eat them in every possible way, in soups, mashed up or even baked in the oven! Legumes are among the best protein sources and in difficult periods they used to be eaten as an alternative to meat. Greeks have never abandoned their habit of eating legumes even when times went better. It is typical of us to eat at least once a week such a dish. Legume soups are very popular this time of the year, when days get colder and dark rainy clouds cover every inch of our blue skies. Soups made from beans, lentils, chickpeas or even black-eyed peas are on our daily menu.
Frozen yoghurt with extra virgin olive oil and sea salt
Using olive oil in sweets, cakes and desserts has become very popular lately. Its presence adds a fruitier taste and gives a smoother texture to the dough- if we’re making one. It’s essential that we use olive oil of the best quality. By doing so we obtain unique taste and flavor.
Samos
Samos is an island situated in the eastern Aegean Sea, less than 2 Km off the coast of Asia Minor. It is an island well known not only for its exceptional natural beauty, but also for its history that goes back to the ancient times. It is a mountainous island (as most of the Greek islands are) but it also has a rich vegetation due to the abundant rainfalls that shower the island in winter. Therefore it comes as no surprise that in the ancient times the island’s name was ‘’Hydrele’’ meaning ‘’Rich in water’’.
Plaka, our favourite quarter in Athens!
Plaka is Athens’s best known quarter. It is a lovely, quiet neighborhood in the heart of the city, full of well preserved colorful houses of neoclassic style. Plaka lies at the foot of the Acropolis hill, on which sits the landmark of the city, the Parthenon temple. A stroll in its narrow streets is a journey into the past of the city. You can get a very good picture of how Athens used to be before its urban expansion in the 50’s. Continue reading
